Track Etiquette
Rules
for race night.
Please keep it safe by understanding track racing rules and
etiquette.
~Entering the track: Walk your bicycle across the bridge to
the
infield. Begin by riding on the warm-up apron, then enter
the track on the back stretch. Why? If you enter on the front,
you may conflict with a rider practicing their finish.
~Do not loiter on the track. This applies to standing
next to the inside wall as well as hanging onto the fence.
If you are on the track you are either a course marshal or
you are on a moving bicycle.
~Warm-up before racing begins: If you are socializing
during your warm-up then ride below the measurement line on
the apron. Once you move up-track you will be mixing with
riders in various stages of their warm-up. Learn the markings
and be where you are expected to be. Faster riders are expected
to be low on the track but clear of the sprinters lane.
~Warm-up during races: You may ride below the
measurement line on the apron. Follow the instructions of
the turn four marshal.
~Overtaking: Always overtake slower riders up-track
(outside). If you are pulling off a pace line ALWAYS conduct
a head check to your right to ensure you are not pulling off
into a rider or overtaking group. If you overtake a rider
DO NOT call "left" or "right," instead call stick
or "stay." If you hear this call directed at you, you are
being overtaken. Thus you should maintain your line and ride
parallel to the lines on the track.
~ Staging: Races will be staged from the turn four
area apron. Please pay attention to the announcer in order
to be aware of your start times.
Track
Markings
~The first line from the inside is white. It is called
the Measurement line or Pole line and serves as the "out-of-bounds"
line. No racing may take place below (inside) the Measurement
line.
~The second line from the inside is yellow. It is called
the Sprinter's line. It designates a 90 centimeter wide lane
called the Sprinter's lane.
~The
highest line on the track is called the Stayer's line.
It is meaningless during a race. During practice it serves
as a division between faster and slower riders. Slower riders
are expected to be above the Stayer's line, faster riders
below. During practice and warm-up never ride next to the
outside wall. Why? A lane needs to be maintained for riders
winding-up for a flying 200 meter effort.
Sprinting and the Sprinter's lane
~At
any point on the track rider MUST overtake another in the
Sprinter's lane on the right (outside). If you pass a rider
in the Sprinter's lane on the left (inside) you will be subject
to protest.
~In the final 200 meters of a sprint lap, the rider occupying
the Sprinter's lane MUST remain there until the finish. If
you move out of the lane you may be subject to relegation
based on irregular sprinting.
~When moving to occupy the Sprinter's lane a rider must have
a clear lead and must not force another rider off the track.
~A rider may not advance their position by riding below the
measurement line.
~A rider may ride below the measurement line only to avoid
a crash or a foul.
The French Broad River Park Phase IV is part of the Asheville
Parks and Recreation Department. The Asheville Velodrome Group
reserves the track for the Ring of Fire race series. It is
only during that reserved time that the track is a bicycle
only environment. At all other times the track is a multi
use facility, and a slightly different set of rules apply.
If you are training at the track during open use times always
ride above the measurement line. Be patient with and help
educate those who are new to the track environment, keep your
eyes open for traffic, and cooperate with the park attendants
at all times.
